Andre Lipscombe is a Western Australian visual artist whose practice centers on reusing discarded domestic paint that would otherwise end up at the tip. His work functions as durable objects that can be hung like paintings or placed as sculptures that can be held in the hands.
His cup artwork features a heart-shaped piece created from found Cypress timber and layered domestic paint over three years. The timber was chainsawed from a tree branch and painted with warm pigments, developing a flesh-like texture through time and accumulated layers. Andre values the tactile intimacy of holdable art over traditional wall-mounted paintings.
After twenty years of pictorial, figurative work, Andre shifted to his current approach emphasizing process over control. He allows circumstances like temperature, time, and feelings to influence the gradual development of surfaces. His work explores discovery rather than representation, using painting to reveal hidden elements through patient layering and accretion.
