Round 1 Nigel Laxton

Artist bio

Nigel Laxton is a Perth-based independent visual artist who has operated from his studio at the Goolugatup Heathcote Cultural precinct since 2015. He graduated from Curtin University with a Master’s degree in 2014 and immediately established his practice at this cultural hub.

Nigel’s artistic focus centres on contemporary, ambiguous artworks that challenge conventional interpretation. His practice emphasizes exploring materiality across various mediums, often incorporating site-specific concepts that respond to particular locations or environments. His primary materials include oil and acrylic paints, sand, and pigments, which he combines to create textured, layered works.

Although primarily a painter, Nigel briefly worked as a printmaker and achieved significant recognition in this medium. He was selected as a finalist in both the prestigious Australian Print Triennial and the Fremantle Print Award, demonstrating his versatility across different artistic disciplines.

His work can be viewed through his Instagram account and website, where he regularly shares updates about his evolving practice and exhibitions.
