Round 1 Cameron Richards

Artist bio

Cameron Richards was born in Perth, Western Australia in 1994. His interest in art started young with graphite pencil drawings for local competitions, but he was steered toward sciences and became a physiotherapist while maintaining his creative passion. As a self-taught artist, Cameron explores darker themes of isolation and natural beauty through portraiture and landscapes, finding painting a peaceful juxtaposition to his science-based career. His featured artwork captures colleague Priya, depicting her navigation between modern Australian culture and her Sri Lankan Hindu heritage. The portrait shows her in contemporary fashion against a weathered Hindu tapestry, symbolizing the distance between old and new worlds. This piece won multiple awards including the 2020 Shirley Hannan National Portrait Prize, South Perth emerging artists Open Prize and People’s Choice awards, plus prizes at Collie Art and Boynes International competitions. Cameron focuses on painting individuals close to him, emphasizing intricate backdrops that speak as loudly as the portraits themselves.
