Rachel Riggs is a mixed media artist who explores femininity’s darker undertones through critical examination of social and historical depictions. Her ongoing research attempts to recognise agency and identity in traditionally sidelined female voices.
Her art cup features “Golden Girl,” a 2021 femmage (female gaze collage) created with vintage wallpaper, 1950s calendar imagery, and insect illustrations. This piece reveals hidden female domesticity and challenges how female images represent purity in advertising, reintroducing depth to often dismissed female characters.
Originally destined for landfill, the “Golden Girl” image from a mining industry calendar was reclaimed and transformed. At first glance, appearing to celebrate traditional feminine beauty, closer inspection reveals decay elements—insects crawling underneath in shadowy worlds, with vintage female gazes looking from the past.
Rachel champions environmental care during the climate crisis, symbolising insects as vital biodiversity workers. Her works assemble discarded fragments, creating powerful commentary on femininity’s complex layers. She believes supporting local artists strengthens community fabric and social well-being, providing accessible creative exploration tools.
