Round 3 Liliana Stafford

Artist bio

Liliana’s work centres on making the unseen seen and celebrating the wonder of our natural world. Working in wire, paper clay, tissue paper, fibre, and paint, she creates sculptures, installations, fibre art, and paintings of varying scales. In 2020, Liliana won the Alcoa Major Prize for sculpture at Castaways Exhibition in Rockingham, with her work exhibited and sold throughout Perth, Melbourne, and Alice Springs.

Her art cup features “Swinging Fun,” born from her love of birds and frequent walks at Manning Lake. Beginning with tissue paper, she evolved to creating bird sculptures in paper clay, soapstone, wire, and glass. She calls them “Seelie birds”—Seelie meaning magic, reflecting birds’ magical nature and their ability to fly, enjoying a wider point of view than humans.

The piece features three paper clay Seelie birds playfully positioned on a swing. A friend and photographer, Dave Kafui Hans-Folly, captured the moment, bringing “Swinging Fun” to life. For Liliana, good coffee and three little birds both inspire smiles—a perfect combination.
