Malcolm is a Fremantle-based artist who creates paintings inspired by his local urban environment. His work focuses on everyday scenes that many people overlook, particularly the industrial landscape of Fremantle’s port area. He’s particularly drawn to the large Wallenius Wilhelmsen ships that regularly dock at the wharf, having completed a series of paintings featuring these vessels over the past three years.
Malcolm’s artistic philosophy centres on encouraging viewers to contemplate the ordinary, finding beauty and interest in commonplace urban elements. His recent exhibition “Signs Of Life – Fremantle” featured 17 paintings of various marks made by humans, from commercial signage to graffiti, exploring our innate need to leave our mark on the world.
He views his art as a way to connect with viewers and help them see familiar places through fresh eyes. Malcolm believes art encourages creative thinking and symbolic expression, which are essential human traits. His advice to aspiring artists is simple: “just do it” and take opportunities as they arise.
