For most of the day, a cup of English breakfast tea is Kate’s preferred beverage. In 2024, she and her brother were having flat whites in Cottesloe from an Art Coffee Cup featuring a friend’s artwork. They joked about how funny it would be if Kate entered her painting of Maggie, the sheepdog, and people walked around Cottesloe with her on their coffee cups. Well, here we are!
Kate painted this piece in 2023 as a birthday gift for her brother. The photo shows his dog Maggie, who’s meant to help with sheep but isn’t the most reliable worker! Kate wanted to include their family farm in the background—it’s where they live and work, and it’ll always be close to their hearts. The photo was taken on a classic hot January day with a brewing storm, perfect for a dam swim.
As Kate painted, she was amazed by how deeply ingrained this landscape is in her, knowing every detail instinctively. She loves painting scenes from home because they feel so familiar and bring back memories with every brushstroke. Kate grew up in York, Western Australia, in a farming family with great appreciation for the Australian landscape.
