Title: Cottesloe Surf Lifesaver
Introducing Ben
What's in your art cup? Tea or coffee?
Definitely coffee, a small, long mac half topped with ½ a sugar, please. It’s got to be strong. Sometimes an ice latte is good on a hot day, and if I really feel like living it up, an affogato. I love my coffee, almost as much as my photography.
Why this piece of artwork for the cup?
I chose this photo because it is simple in design and has a relaxing feel to it. I thought that anyone enjoying their morning coffee would appreciate some tranquillity on their cup.

What is the story behind this piece of art?
I have spent years photographing Cottesloe, in particular the car culture between Cottesloe and Fremantle, through a project called ‘A Portrait of Cars.’ You can follow this project on Instagram @aportraitofcars. So I love photographing the car culture; however, on occasions when it is too picturesque to ignore, I turn the camera to face the other direction, ie towards the beach. This photo will be featured in my upcoming book, ‘A Portrait of Cars—Road Warriors of Fremantle.’
"I love seeing art in print and not just on a computer, and this is such a great way to enjoy some amazing art in a casual way".
What have you enjoyed about this project?
I love the idea of printing my photography onto objects other than wall frames. It is great seeing such beautiful pieces of art on the cups through this project. I love seeing art in print and not just on the computer and this is such a great way to enjoy some amazing art in a casual way.

Why is it important to support the arts?
I think a lot of artists need a bit of help where possible. This project helps with momentum to encourage artists to keep forging their way creatively.
Where can people find your photography?

In October 2024 I published my first photobook from the series ‘A Portrait of Cars,’ featuring Fremantle and its car culture. I had an exhibition and photobook launch, which was a huge success, selling out the books on opening night.
In October 2025 I plan on publishing the second book from the series—‘A Portrait of Cars—Road Warriors of Cottesloe.’.
